Alicia Holcomb is still waiting for her newborn to recover.

When she was 16 weeks pregnant, a sonogram showed Holcomb’s daughter Aarya Mason was going to be born with a birth defect – gastroschisis.

“When she was born … her intestines were on the outside,” said

Holcomb, who lives in Iraan, about 3½ hours south of Lubbock. “It’s been very hard. When I had her, they had to rush her to the operating room, so I got to see her for maybe three or four seconds, and then she was gone.”

Aarya had surgery to put her intestines back inside her body that  day, June 23, but has been recovering in the neonatal intensive care unit at Covenant Medical Center since.
