Red Deer building permit values up sharply this year

$62.6 million in building permits issued through June compared with $39 million in 2023

Red Deer building permit values are up 60 per cent through six months.

To the end of June, 540 permits worth $62.6 million have been issued, compared with 496 permits worth $39 million halfway through 2023.

Commercial construction is driving the spike in permit values. While the number of permits issued is identical – 114 in 2024 and 2023 – the value of the projects undertaken is more than double this year. Commercial construction permits worth $39.3 million have been handed out, compared with $16.4 million last year.

Other sectors are also showing that more money is being spent. There were 15 industrial permits worth $4.9 million issued, compared with 18 worth $2.2 million last year.

In the public service category, 32 permits worth $6.7 million were approved, compared with 27 worth $4.7 million through June 2023.

On the residential side, more permits have been issued but the total value is down, likely reflecting more renovation jobs. There have been 379 permits worth $11.6 million issued, compared with 337 worth $15.5 million a year ago.

Month-over-month, the residential sector has shown increased activity. There were 86 permits worth $3.5 million issued last month, compared with 67 worth $1.6 million in June 2023.

The total number of permits was 120 worth $5.7 million, compared with 95 worth $4 million in June 2023.

The biggest permits included $750,000 for a new restaurant in Timberstone and a $540,000 permit for improvements to an Edgar Industrial Park business.
