Moncton sees robust building permits in Q2

Building permit activity in the City of Moncton significantly increased during the second quarter of 2024.

City officials said 437 permits totalling $92.2 million were issued. Year to date, building permits amount to $148.6 million, indicating a 50 per cent increase from last year’s $99 million.

In the residential sector, 152 permits were issued for 306 new units totalling $48.1 million, representing 52 per cent of second-quarter permits. Significant projects include a $16.6 million, 123-unit apartment on Millennium Boulevard and a $13.2 million, 87-unit apartment on Leopold F. Belliveau Drive.

Investment in institutional and government infrastructure increased notably, with 21 permits totalling $12.2 million. Of particular interest were the $4.4 million spent on the Atlantic Science Centre Phase 2 project on Université Avenue and the $1.1 million renovation for Wee College daycare on MacNaughton Avenue.

City officials also say 51 permits worth $29.9 million were issued for commercial and industrial construction, making up 32 per cent of the total. Key projects included U-Haul’s $8.8-million warehouse renovation on Trinity Drive and Gentek Building Supplies’ $5.2-million warehouse construction on Desbrisay Avenue.

Kevin Silliker, director of economic development for the City of Moncton, said the high building permit value this quarter signals investor and developer confidence in Moncton’s potential.

“These projects are not just numbers: they represent homes, jobs, and opportunities for our community. We are dedicated to supporting this momentum and ensuring that Moncton remains an attractive destination for business and investment,” said Silliker.
